A large amount of conservation and biodiversity research has been conducted in Gishwati-Mukura National Park over the past 10 years, particularly in the Gishwati Sector.

Research focusing on biodiversity inventories, community use of natural resources and attitudes to conservation and ecosystem services is ongoing through partners such as the National University of Rwanda.

A long-running chimpanzee research project is also being conducted in Gishwati under the auspices of West Chester University.
